For the past two and a half years, McREL’s presence
in our school has helped tremendously in getting us
focused on school improvement, research-based
practices, and student success.

Improving schools with diverse needs
In the Cree Nation in Northern Quebec, educators and school leaders
are discovering how to work as a purposeful community to increase
student achievement and graduation rates. McREL’s Success in Sight®
has given them the tools to track student data, build on the strength of
their community, and focus on specific student goals, such as increasing
attendance and punctuality.
McREL and the Cree School Board began working together in 2010 and
have raised the graduation rate from 1 percent to 15 percent using a
“less is more” approach to school improvement. Leadership teams now
understand the stages of continuous improvement and how to apply them;
use agreed-upon processes to meet their goals; involve all staff members
in implementing, monitoring, and sustaining school initiatives; and meet
regularly using roles, structures, and processes for their meetings.
Read about how one Cree school, Wabannutao Eeyou School, used
its community building skills to make real changes
in student attendance.
